david_eicher
Well, I guess I am truely getting older. I have noticed a shift in my focusing to the rear of my subjects in some of my prints. Are diopter correction lenses still offered? Is Mamiya still solvent, what about Bronica? Did anyone pick them up? Thanks ahead for any info. leicaglow
I'm not sure if this is a criteria by which to select a camera, but Hasselblad makes them for their prism and waist level finders. In fact, a lot of the prism finders are tough to use without the proper diopter for your eyes.
Jochen_S
My TLR prism has some ring to be screwed off. A local optician probably could grind a lens into it. If you need some aspherical correction this should be the way to go.
john_stockdale2
Which camera? Diopters are available for many MF cameras. Also they are sold on Ebay, where I have picked up a couple. If you do a search for diopters in the MF forum (older posts, for your make of camera) you'll probably find some info. Choosing a diopter is not straightforward. Also, some makes offer them in 1 unit increments only instead of half unit increments, and this is inadequate for us old folks whose eyes have such a small range of accommodation. Do you have an eyesight prescription? (not that you can just go for the value on the prescription, I should add.)
jon_shiu
Hi, the Mamiya 645E has built in adjustable diopter from +5 to -5 and it works quite well.
Jon Shiu
Elk, California
Mendocino Coast Black and White Photography: www.jonshiu.com
david_eicher
John Stockdale, I have two Mamiya 645s (M and J) and one Bronica ETRS model cameras. I use to be a -1 diopter, then as eye doctor stated, your eyes can actually get better for a short time and I got rid of them. Recently I tried putting them back on the camera, but they did not seem to help me. I am going to schedule an eye examine and I will bring one of the diopters with me. It all may boil down to low light and poor focusing on my part. Dam I hate getting old.
john_stockdale2
David, when your eyes have lost their power of accommodation, you need the exact diopter to give a clear focus of the ground glass with your eye/diopter/viewfinder system . (In a rangefinder system it's a bit different.) Do you have the optical prescription from when the -1 worked? Compare it to an up to date optical prescription. It might indicate a bit more or less is needed. Take your cameras along, and your -1 diopter, to your optometrist because he/she will have heaps of diopters that you could hold up against the viewfinder to get a pretty good idea of the value you need. Do the test in dim light because it's more critical. When your eye's aperture (iris) is wide open you have minimal depth of field. For a young person just getting the spherical diopter from the eyeglass prescription is generally good enough, but as you get old, it's more critical, and it depends on the camera's viewfinder system quite a lot. If you think you have the right value, you might be able to get one off the shelf from B&H, or some optometrists can have one made to your exact value. Some don't like doing anything different, but what you need from them is the number. Someone will make one for you, and mount it in the existing diopter frame/ring. Let us know how you go. mary_thull
Does anyone know if there is a diopter correction for the Contax 645AF? I know that it comes with the +1, but that is not enough for me. (I use a +3 on my Mamiya 7). I've looked everywhere I can think of, but haven't come up with one for this camera. Is it possible to have one made? Anyone else who's (extremely) far sided have luck with this issue on the Contax 645AF?
