jim kerr
Any suggestions as to what would be a good but fairly cheap camera to do hand held infrared pictures with? The point and shoot variety would be ok......Jim
beauh44
Hi Jim, One thought: You might want to look for a decent used Sony F707 or F717, both of which came with "Nightshot" (infrared) mode, on Ebay. These are, I think, 5 megapixel cameras with good image quality. Unfortunately they're now a discontinued model but should be "fairly cheap" because of that. Good luck! Brad_
I've taken tons of IR images (<a href= "http://pages.sbcglobal.net/b-evans/Images9/ IR_Web/">some here</a>) with a Sony f707 and that works pretty good using an external B +W 093 IR pass filter.<P> Today I'm considering the not yet released <a href= "http://www.dpreview.com/news/ 0702/07022705sonyh9h7.asp">Sony H9</a>. Worth a look. Not too much money and has a nice swivel 3" LCD screen. Need more detailed info though... <P> The upcoming Fuji IS-1 is another possibility, but more $$$. www.citysnaps.net
jacob_brown
What's "fairly cheap" mean? For a couple of hundred dollars you can send off a DSLR to be turned into an IR-only camera. Vincent Versace did that with a D70 and said it was the best IR camera he ever used, and that he's thinking of have the same mod done on one of his D2Xes. beauh44
Hi Jacob, I'm considering having my 10D converted but can't decide on who to have do it. Do you know who Versace used by any chance? Thanks!

roger_kallet
These companies do IR conversions to DSLR cameras... http://lifepixel.com/ http://www.irdigital.net/ http://maxmax.com/IRCameraConversions.htm For those who want to do the conversion themselves, Life Pixels shows step-by-step instructions. --Roger
