dennis_mansour1
Has anyone tried this Sock that has elastic and fits over the flash head and acts as a diffuser, I bought one from Adorama but I would like feedback if anyone has tried it. It is used direct lighting , no bounce and there is min. light loss. Thanks, Dennis
twmeyer
The "Strobo Sock" at Adorama works best on a round reflector head. I use a larger version with a 9in telephoto reflector from Quantum and I love it. I don't think you'll see a lot of improvement on a normal 5in reflector head, like Quantum, Norman, Sunpack and Lumedyne use.
These are not really made for your typical hot shoe flashes with rectangular heads. The diffusion cloth would just lay directly against the lens of that type of flash, offering very little scattering of light and just reducing power.
If you have one of these 5in reflector type of flashes, Quantum released (last October) this mini softbox that might be better, as the surface area appears to be larger than a 5in round. It looks like it will only work with a strobe that uses that style of flash tube (Quantum, Lumedyne, Norman, and maybe the Sunpack 120j). It's called a QF-69 which may stand for Quantum Flash 6x9, possibly indicating a 6"x9" front panel.
I may have to try one on my Lumedyne, or not. I would like to hear from anyone who has tried it... t

twmeyer
Offline exchange, added for the database:
Hi Tom, thank you for your response on my diffuser. I am using a Metz 60CT1 and Vivitar 285HV. The heads are rectangular so can you recommend a good diffuser that I can use and shoot direct without bounce ? I like the Quantum but the unit and the battery is too expenseive for the little I use it, so I want to get a Diffuser to go over my flash heads. I appreciate your time and help, thanks, Dennis. steve_hovland
I use Rosco diffusion materials taped on my reflectors and shoe flashes. Tough Frost and Rolux are my favorites. They soak up about 1 f-stop. About $6 for a 20x24 sheet at grip or theatrical supplies.
