Dental Photography with the R1

Working with dentists over the years, it has become confusing as to which Nikon

flash system is appropriate. Some educators still recommend the Sb-29s, which

hasn't been available for over three years. Other dentists wonder if the Nikon

R1/R1C1 flash will work with their older D100 or Fuji S series. What is the

solution? While the R1C1 will work with these older cameras you will not be able

to take advatage of the wireless capabilities (two costly cables are required).

Nor will you be able to take advantage of Nikon's newer iTTL system. Your best

bet is to invest in a newer/current model such as the D80 or D300 with the R1

flash for doing your intraoral photography. Please click here for more information

Why a D80 or d300 combo? You're paying for a lot of functions you won't use -- in dental work you really care for stabilized, right on image with decent DOF and acceptable working distance, a big plus is if your assitant could operate the camera to save you time.

D40(x) is lighter, easier to hold in one hand and equipped with the new 105 VR AF-S (or even the 60 that will just come out) is much better than half a brick in your hand...

The D40x is a much smaller and lighter camera, and it boasts the same resolution sensor as

the D80. If you aren't going to buy a camera for dental intraoral use, it would save you some

money. If you are going to use it for intraoral photography, your savings will go away once

you purchase the entire R1C1 kit as the D40x does not have the flash command module built

in. The price between the two flash systems is about $200.00.
