robert_byrd1
I've heard that David Hamilton uses Minolta manual cameras, and that he uses sandpaper on the front elements of the lenses to give that diffused look to his shots. Can anyone confirm this?
leo_griffiths
Minolta yes, sandpaper no.
fmueller
If you wanted to try this, you could probably use sandpaper on a UV filter, and use it on various lenses if you want a "diffused look". Of course once you used sandpaper on the actual front element, the lens is shot. BTW - Minolta offered a very nice set of portraier filters (sp?), which would probably be more suitable for your purposes. Unfortunately they are quite uncommon on the second had market. Finally, there is also the Minolta 85mm Varisoft lens that allows you to adjust softness. Of course these solutions are a bit dearer than a piece of sandpaper, but maybe cheaper than replacing your whole lens collection after you get bored with the "diffused look". ;-)
robert_byrd1
Maybe Hamilton's soft filtration is no more than his rapid breathing condensed onto the lens. ;-)
