geoffrey_swenson
I have a Nikon D200 I got two weeks ago and the last few days when I select the RAW and any combination of JPEGs in the "Quality Tab" I end up w/ 2 JPEGs, but not a RAW file. If I select only RAW (no JPEGs)only then I get a RAW image on the disk.
This is a new problem and it is immaterial how I transfer the images from the camera to the computer. I tried it on several computers w/ different setups, but this problem must be w/ the camera.
Would some one have an idea? Many thanks,
G.S. leicaglow
I suppose you've tried formatting the CF card in the camera, or using different CF cards? You can also try resetting the camera through the menu.
geoffrey_swenson
No I didnt change anything w/ the CF card. As soon as I switch to RAW only, (no JPEG secondary file) all is well. How do you reset all to the defaults? I guess the Reset Menu is not the one to reset all to the basic setup.
Thanks again,
G.S.
wilfred_wong
how you transfer the files to computer? copy using windows or using NC4(which i usually use as it can creat a folder using date automatically) or other software?
tom_luongo1
The D200 manual has a few quirks. Look under "Two-button reset" in the index and go to page 97. Why "Two-button reset" and not "Reset"? Go figure. Hold the Qual button and the +/- button for two seconds to reset the camera. Custom settings are not affected. Is your computer set to show the three letter suffixes, .NEF and .JPG? And it's worth checking the firmware version. This definitely sounds weird weird.
david_h._hartman
Geoffrey,

Your camera has four banks for storing shooting and custom settings. You may be setting one bank then switching to another. The settings you just made dont come with you to the new bank. This is a really easy mistake to make.

Shoot a few frames and inspect your CF card directly either in camera or in a CF card reader. If you dont find both NEF and JPG files on the card then 10 to 1 you have your camera set differently than you think. I suggest that you down load a PDF manual from Nikon and sit down at your computer with your camera in hand.

Good Luck,

Dave Hartman. geoffrey_swenson
Thank you all and thank you for the suggestions. Yes Dave, I realized there is a lot to learn about these digital contraptions and the manuals could be laid out better.
I am sure Ill be able to figure it out. Thanks to Tom about the "Two-button reset" recommendation.
G.S.

twmeyer
Instead of working through the menus to change the "quality setting" just hold down the "Qual" button on the top left dial and use the rear dial (Main Command Dial) to select the combination you want from the LCD screen on the top deck... t
