jim_kozek
I have purchased a nikon n80 slr camera and in the manual they refer to cpu lenses, what does cpu stand for and what is a cpu lense? Thanks for your time and answers. Jim
david_blackburn1
cpu stands for central processing unit. any AF or AI-p lens is a cpu lens. the MF lenses are not cpu lenses (unless they are AI-p). it is possible to have many (most) of the MF lenses "chipped," however, so that they work with the n80 and many newer bodies which require cpu's. alex_lofquist
The marketing gurus have gotten ahold of the lens specifications and tried to make it something that it isn't. It is certainly no CPU, nor likely a microprocessor. It is probably just a logic chip which transmits minimum aperture, maximum aperture, focal length, and distance focused. plattro
If you see a row of electrical contacts in the back of the lens where it mates with the camera, it is a CPU lens. All AF, AF-S, D, G, DX and VR lenses are CPU lenses. (P, too, but they're uncommon & expensive)
