CoolPix 5000 turning off on it's own

Just got a CP5000, it's the first digital I've owned so consider me a

newbie.

 

I charged the battery till the light on the charger went out. The

battery status icon on the camera shows a full charge.

 

I turn on the camera and after about 3 minutes or less it turns off

by itself. In all instances the camera was not sitting still, I was

moving it around so the autofocus would be working. I was also

zooming the lens in and out.

 

In all instances of it shutting down on it's own, it left the lens

extended. Moving the On/Off dial to the Off position would cause the

lens to retract. Moving the dial to the On position would once again

turn the camera on but it would shut off again after a short while.

 

Any ideas? Am I doing something wrong, or not doing something right?

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'll bet it's explained in the manual. Both my Olympus cams do that.

Try pressing and holding the shutter release button to "wake it up".

I don't know about the 5000, but in my Nikon 950 I can change the length before the camera shuts off. It's probably hidden somewhere in all those menus - look in the instruction manual.

You can change the time that it shuts itself off at, but the factory preset is 30 seconds. It's under Set Up in the menu. If you try to "wake it up" by pushing the shutter release half way down, give it a minute to do it - it seems to take almost as long as powering it on.
