ray .
B&H has these cams back ordered at the moment, and Calumet has only the older 3.2 megapixel model. Anyone know of a reliable retail seller for this camera? Anyone have the camera and wish to comment on how they like it? Thanks
majid
eBay from a Japanese seller seems to be the only way to get a U4R or a i4R.
douglas_greenberg
I bought one from J&R Electronics in New York. You should do a web search and find one of those "price comparison" web sites to see who has it available currently. I bought the camera because it's tiny and fits in a pocket, and also because like the Nikon CP4500 before it, it's a good camera for a particular specialized use, i.e., taking photos of birds through a spotting telescope. It has beautiful "fit and finish," and is a smart-looking little camera. It has very little shutter lag/delay and an excellent lens. The quality of basic "snapshots" taken with the camera are good, as long as the ISO level is kept low (this is not unusual for small digicams). Potential buyers should be aware, however, that it's essentially a boutique-ish point-and-shoot camera. There are minimal manual controls available. In this respect it's nothing at all like the CP4500. There are a bunch of "scene modes," and you can control the ISO and some other basic functions, including exposure compensation. But you have no shutter or aperture priority, etc. It also has minimal macro capability. So as someone who has other cameras for "creative control," I like the U4R. As a "digiscoping" camera it's useful and as a handy pocketable p & s it takes very nice, sharp basic photos. But don't expect too much here. For the same price you can get cameras with a lot more features, actually.
franka t.l.
If you can furnish me an e-mail address, I can send you some test shoot I've done with the U4R. But really, I have to agree with the previous post. Its image quality just do not live up to the namesake. In fact I've just done test session with the i4R a week ago, and while the lens is amazing, the imaging engine just son;t cut it. And let me stress that I am a long time and loyal user of Contax cameras too. what an irony right !!
philip_roberts1
I have the Contax i4r. The images are not as good as those from my EOS300D with Canon L lenses. And why on earth should they be? Bottom line - for a very compact, carry anywere digital camera it is without equal. Yes, the imaging performance is not much better than any other 4 MP compact, but it is on average half the physical size of its rivals, build is sumptuous, and note that the 2.8 aperture lens can actually create visible shallow DOF! Almost unheard of on compact digitals. As long as you dont have it as your only digital camera, you will love it. And the design is the nearest thing to the Minox 'Spy camera' you'll currently see. Looks great in top pocket of the tuxedo - just dont drop it in the Martini - shaken, not stirred.

MTC Photography
The best feature of U4r is wait level finder, good for taking incognito pictures All other compact digital cameras have eye level finder So far I don't find sweavel lens has any advantage. MTC Photography
If you are photographing someone on a balcony, you can pretend you are watching an iphone, and you can take stealth photo of the person at the balcony by using the sweavel lens.
