Contacted About a Fashion Shoot

  1. Hi, all.

I was contacted about a fashion shoot. The look is urban and it will focus primarily on models carrying accessories. The shooting, based on the samples, looks pretty straightforward: natural light, busy city environment, non-camera aware models.

The company hiring me said this about payment:

Photographers we hire usually take on the responsibilities of coordinating the shoot, selecting location, and disbursing fees. An advance payment of XXXX will be issued prior to the shoot; this covers your XXX upfront and XXXX for talents’ fee payable to their manager.

If you’re comfortable with the above terms, please reply with the name and address to be written on your check and contract.
[FONT=Verdana, sans-serif]I looked up the company and they appear to be legit, with a legit website, Linkedin, etc.

My question is, is this a typical way this sort of thing is handled? Someone sending me a big check in order to disburse funds from smacks a little scammy to me, but I've never handled a shoot like this with models, wardrobe, hair, etc.

    Thanks for your feedback.

Sounds like a scam. This is a typical way of gaining your details and then the 'payment' disappears.
I would Google the address and email of the company and confirm their details and contact them, not through the details from your email.
  3. No, it's never how things are done. It's almost certainly a scam. In my experience, those services are never paid in advance.

    Be careful out there!
  4. Thanks, guys.
  5. Update: Definitely was a scam, but an elaborate one. The scammer was well spoken. I asked him to provide verification of his ID and he went dark.
