Compensation for full calendar

Recommended Posts

I have been approached concerning the possibility of a company using my work alone to

make a wall calendar. Rights would be for the single year, calendar rights only, with a run

size of around 160K. Any suggestions on what to charge? I have searched around and on

this site and have seen links to FotoQuote and HindSight, but would love to know what

some of you have been paid for such a project. If the answer is that I should get one of

these pricing programs, I will certainly do so, but my reading has indicated that pricing

can vary wildly, so a survey of this community would be helpful.
Will this be a standard 12-sheet? If so, I've sold 12-sheets to Corporations for $5,000 up to 30K copies. at 160K, I'd probably charge a min of $7500, but more likely try for 10-12K.

Remember, this is about the company promoting themselves and their image more than your photos, and that's where the value for your photos should be set. Yet I wouldn't be surprised if they play the "It'll be good promotion for you and your work" - and talk you down to $2500 - $3k.
I've never ever ever seen enough promtional return on any of these sorts of deals to warrant discounting by more than 15-25% of standard commercial rates.
I deal with a lot of calendar companies and getting a full calendar is no easy feat. These companies usually will pay between $150 and $300 per page and give you compensation for the cover, even though it will be used inside as well. They should pay for 13 images. One company pays $400 per shot and I suggest going for this upper end and ask $5200 for the whole thing.

If I read the original post correctly, he is referring to a corporate calendar, not a retail calendar. The prices you quote are fine for retail, but since corporate use is tied into promotional use, it commands a higher fee, normally 1.5x - 2x the rate of a retail calendar. Also, Most retail calendar companies consider themselves fortunate if the sell 10K of a given title, very successful at 25K, a smash at 40k, and in leaques w/ sports illustrated swimsuit if they can crack the 100k mark. I doubt that 2% of all calendar titles produced ever crest 50k+ in a single year sales. Yet this company wants to do 160K copies - certainly worth far more than a standard retail product.
Actually, I am not entirely sure if their use would be corporate or retail, but I believe their

intent is retail. So, I am glad this distinction was brought up. Also, I have since been told

that multiple calendars would be made, each with a smaller run of about 40K. So it looks

like a fee around $5000 is about right.
Thanks for the input!
