I've cleaned out my CoolScan 9000.

It's not rocket science, but it does require a gentle hand.

If it's similar to the 5000,

  1. Undo the screws on the bottom - Keep track of them as opposed to other screws...
  2. Slide off cover
     
  3. Once you are inside, use rocket-style blower (no canned gas) and a very soft brush to clean off visible elements
  4. You may not need to take it all apart.

 

Most important,

NEVER FORCE IT,

DON'T EVEN GET A BIGGER HAMMER.:p

Just a way to keep track of screws that works very well in replacing HD in an iMac. Get a roll of blue painter's tape, and as you dismantle, tear off a small section of the tape or each screw to attach to, then stick the tape with the screw attached as close to where it goes on the device. Now, you don't lose screws, or confuse which one goes where. HTH
