"Chaing Pai-Pai"

Back in college, in what seems now like a previous age, I found, deep

in the bowels of our school library, a yellowing popular teen

magazine from, I think it was, Malaysia. On its back cover was a B&W

picture of two girls, dressed identically in white minidresses and go-

go boots, each with her left leg slightly raised as though in mid-

step, and each with her left hand in the air, as though waving.

Above their heads were the words, "Chaing Pai-Pai".

I couldn't read any of the magazine's text (since it was mostly in

some language and alphabet I didn't know) - and had no idea

what "Chaing Pai-Pai" meant - but I thought it was interesting,

especially that final picture on the cover; and so I "liberated" it

(or so I told myself, in the thoughtless way of youth) for inclusion

in my picture morgue.

Some years later, still clueless as to what it might mean, I showed

it to my then-wife - who figured it out right away. "It's pidgin,"

she said. "They're 'Saying Bye-Bye'".

For some time now, oddly enough, "Chaing Pai-Pai" has been going

though my head with regard to Photo.net - only this time I know what

it means, mostly because I'm the one saying it.

In the sixteen months, roughly, since I first came upon Photo.net,

I've looked at thousands of photos, commented on several hundred,

posted roughly one thousand messages to the various archived

discussion boards, pissed off a few people (only a few?), and made a

few friends. Best of all, I hope, I somehow convinced Brian

Mottorshead to create this forum . . . and then conned him into

letting me moderate it. In short, I've learned a great deal, and had

fun doing it. But now it's time to move on. I've needed to for some

time now.

About two months ago I asked a couple of forum participants if they'd

like to moderate this forum together. They said yes . . . but I was

having too much fun to let it go. Whether they are still interested,

I don't know. But, if not, I'm sure one of you will be.

Thanks to Brian for agreeing to create this forum, and allowing me to

moderate it. And thanks to everyone for participating.
