Can't delete Canon Raw .cr2 Files...please help

Discussion in 'Mirrorless Digital Cameras' started by travis_donner|1, Feb 21, 2006.

  1. I have searched the archives and while there were several threads on the issue, I have not found a solution to my specific problem. I am new to digital photography (just borrow a friends canon 5d). I transfered the raw and jpg files directly from the card (I have a slot for the card on my laptop). I have tried several time to delete the .cr2 files that I don't want to save but I get 2 error messages: When I use Adobe Bridge the error message is that the "Access is denied". When I try to delete the files directly from the "My Pictures" folder the error message is "Cannot delete: File is being used by another person". Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  2. 1) Reboot. 2) Try moving the files to another folder. 3) Delete the folder you moved the files to. If that fails, then try the same logged in as Administrator.

  3. If you're using windows this might be because it is trying to load thumbnails while you are deleting them. Really you probably want to copy the files you want from the card, and then format the cardin the camera.

  4. Hi Travis, You wouldn't happen to have Microsoft's RAW Image Viewer Utility installed by any chance? If so, this is the likely culprit and a known "issue". Go to Microsoft's site and update it - they've fixed the problem with the latest version.

  5. Quarantee this will cure the problem... http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ It works.

I tried it with a friend's files that were locked by this weird Microsoft RAW Viewer problem and it didn't work. Just so you'll know. ;-)
The only thing that did work (besides upgrading Microsoft's software) was opening up a Command Prompt window, killing explorer.exe in Task Manager, manually navigate to the folder with the un-deleteable files, manually delete the files, then restart explorer.exe. Again, I tried it.

  7. Another option is deleting folders as I suggested. So long as you are viewing the containing folder, XP should not be doing any thumbnail generation on the subfolder.

  8. I'm also unable to delete .cr2 files. I was using the Windows raw file viewer utility, so in installed the latest update, still couldn't delete the files. Installed and tried to use Unlocker, still can't get rid of the files. Can't delete them, can't move them. Any other solutions? David

  9. I have the same problem. I've tried the suggested solutions, and they haven't worked. Using My Computer and Photoshop, I can't delete or move my CR2 files or the folders they are in. I tried deleting one after using Task Manager to shut down Explorer. The file still wouldn't delete and I had a helluva time re-starting Firefox after rebooting the computer. Some time ago I tried Unlocker. I don't remember what the problem was, but it didn't work either.
I'm at my wits end. Any new ideas?

  10. I forgot to mention: I don't have the Microsoft RAW viewer. I view RAW files in Adobe RAW. Also, I'm using XP.
Thanks in advance to anybody who can help solve this problem.

  11. I found a solution. It was on the Adobe forum. The files can be deleted from Image Ready. I realize that's not a solution for everybody, but if you have IR, it works!
