  1. Important: please keep your image under 700 pixels wide/high for in-line viewing, and please try to keep the FILE SIZE UNDER 300kb. Note that this includes photos hosted off-site (at Flickr, Photobucket, your own site, etc). Are you new to this thread? The general guidelines for these Thursday threads are right here. Remember: only one image each week!
Happy Thursday everyone! I haven't shot much this week, but I plan on waking up at 5am to drive to a birding hotspot. Spring has arrived early in Indiana; we hit 82 deg. F today, a new record. Hopefully this warm weather will encourage more photos. Here's one I shot the other day of a Downy Woodpecker in our yard.
  2. Just back from a week in Arizona, sorting through a lot of shots from the Tucson and Sedona areas. I had the chance to get a 500mm lens for the week, and that was kind of fun. What a monster, but there were some opportunities to use it. Here's a shot of an early hummingbird (it's been warmer than usual in southern Arizona as well) - not a perfect shot but it was fun to have the opportunity.
  3. Out playing with some of the boys, I was doing some promo stuff for them and these girls were happy to play along.
  4. Homage to Keith Haring.
  5. A little dirt track action from last year-looking forward to the season opener at the end of this month.

  9. Second hummingbird of the post so far! Last weekend at the local wildlife reserve I got this shot of a Rufous/Allen’s Hummingbird. Beautiful bird. Submitted it to a bird ID forum to try to determine if it was Rufous or Allen’s. General consensus was Rufous, but not conclusive.

  15. I belong to a local camera club which is celebrating its 75th anniversary. Last Saturday many of us traveled to an Inn near Lancaster PA where in 1952 the club members met for a photoshoot and then took a group picture. We met at the same Inn, same table, and replicated the photo. It was a lot of fun and the food was great too. Here's a shot of the camera that we used to take the picture.

  21. Happy Thursday. We have a vernal pond in the yard. It is a small ecosystem supporting many animals from bugs to birds. These are frog eggs (still sorting out the species). This was the first time in water with my camera on a tripod. It was a bit nerve biting. I'll see if I can photograph their progress.
  22. A face only a mother could love...a male Muscovy duck, one of 8 that lives on our property.
  23. Let's try again...

  25. It's been a very busy week, but I did manage to squeeze in a couple of hours to shoot some old relics near Sparta, TN...
  26. Great pics so far!
I ended up at Jennet's Pier in Nags Head. I started out with another location in mind, but it's OK to go with plan b.
  27. Went for a walk in the yard and decided to look down into the puddle :)
  28. I got out to a couple of innings of my first baseball game of the season.
  29. Just some shadowplay from last shoot
  30. Its been awhile since I've participated, but I got this shot yesterday that I really wanted to share.

  40. Nathan, it was 81 F here this week.
  41. I saw the specs on the new Canon 5Dmkiii, so for once instead of buying the old version just before the new one came out, I bought the old version just after the new one was announced. I think the new one looks swell, but the old one will meet my personal needs very well indeed, and they did drop the price a bit. Besides, my daughter has been after me to give her the 5D mk i.
Here's one of my first efforts at 25,600 ISO (H2). The room was lit by a single fluorescent 60 watt equivalent in the PH5 lamp. Noise reduction was off, but a little work was done in PS on it. I think this is probably enough ISO expansion for an old user of GAF 500 slide film.
  42. **Didn't get out with my camera much this week. Here is one I took out of my car window.
  43. My son is doing a report on the California missions, so we made a trip to Santa Barbara this weekend.

  47. Nothing exciting this week from me but wanted to contribute. Found this in the woods at work!

  49. In honor of Pi Day yesterday:
Photo from the Pi Bar on Valencia St., SF. Place was packed as all draught pints were a mere $3.14 each. CHEERS! Hope you celebrated like Albert Einstein too.
    Photo: 7D, 24mm, ISO 800, 6 secs. at f/16, 3/14/2012.
(so many good photos here... but Damn - Dan Ferrin - you nailed it - bird & truck.... wow)

Pi Bar is great. I'd go there regularly if I liked beer and thought pizza was good for me. Unfortunately, neither do. My wife is friends with the owner, he has a place in the Castro (Eureka) and one in Glen Park (Chenery Park) that are both excellent with full bars.
  51. Took this last weekend. They are in full bloom today.
  52. The flowers are finally coming out here with temperatures getting in the 70s. I'm still figuring out how to use extension tubes with the lenses I have.

  53. Ready for the shot...
  54. I've really got to edit my files the day before so I'm not so late posting them.
This is a Diamorpha plant. It only grows on granite outcrops like this one on Arabia Mountain near Atlanta. (Arabia Mtn is similar to Stone Mountain in case you've been there -- it's just a whole lot more pristine.) In a couple weeks, I hope to post a shot with the bloomed flower.
This was taken handheld at about 0.4x life size with a 7D and 100mm L IS Macro. Ain't technology great? 1/80s, f/11, ISO 400. IS, Autoexposure Bracketing & AI Servo Focus on. Next time I'll do it properly with a tripod. ;-)
  55. Captured this about two weeks ago after a snowstorm. Yesterday, the temperature got up to 75 degrees F. Weird...
  56. Let's try that again...
  57. Hi gang. Running late this week. Just a night shot, was playing around with some home brew lighting. Great shots here this week.
    One more time. :/
  58. Stereotypical Brit Mug
    Shot with a 5D2, 28mm f/1.8 @ f/2.
  59. As usual lately, my contribution comes on sunday.
When I took this photo I didn't notice the ISO was at 1600.
Tried converting to black & white, because I wanted to participate this week.
Hope I'm not the last contributor again.
  60. That's actually quite nice, Marcel!
  61. Thank you Andy.
It's growing on me, I'm linking it more now then when I was looking at it the first time.
