Canon Thursday Photo 2011: #26

Happy Thursday everyone! It's hard to believe we're already halfway through 2011. Have you stuck with your New Year's Resolutions? What about your photo related ones? I know mine aren't coming along too well, but I'm still shooting quite a bit, even if it is in the back yard, so that's good for me. For those of you in the U.S. have a great and safe Independence Day weekend... and everyone else have a great and safe weekend, too.

While I was in the backyard today I thought I'd put the extension tubes on and shoot some dragonflies, and I do believe this is a dragonfly. Maybe someone here can help me with a more specific name. I shot with my 400mm f/5.6L and the whole Kenko tube set, 68mm worth. I know it sounds like a lot, but the MFD of the 400 is quite long, so the entire set is necessary to fill the frame. I think Mr. Kissel inquired about the max focus distance with this set up a few weeks ago; I didn't get the tape measure out but the max focus distance is about 6 feet and minimum is about 4 feet. I can get closer with less tubes on the 70-200mm, and this is a great combination, but the 400 has better corner to corner sharpness whereas the zoom gets soft at the edges, and it allows for more working distance.

edit* shutter speed below should be 1/1250

00Yy5u-374545584.jpg.91f690af92744cdcacaa8923ce54d748.jpg

My parents are staying with us for two weeks, so today's outing was to the three botanical domes in Milwaukee. This was a broad leaf directly overhead and back-lit from some nice sunlight. 5D and 24-105. Simple detail of mother nature's beauty (and not quite as appetizing as Lupo's offering)

I was able to get out last weekend to the North Shore of Lake Superior and managed a few pictures.

The sky was a very bright overcast so contrast was somewhat challenging.

I came across this red flower against the lichen covered rocks and thought I would try to make it work.

I was in Kradolf (Switzerland) last Saturday, attending an event with re-enactors and ex-military vehicles. This is a G-13 Panzerjager, a tank used by the Swiss Army after WW II, build in Czechoslovakia and based on a WW II german design (called Hetzer).
This vehicle belongs to a private collector that restored it to running order just a few years ago. Pictures was taken during an off-road demo, with the owner's son an wife looking outside the tank

00Yy74-374579584.jpg.3545f4191ab04ce9ff658ed2476901a0.jpg

As always, some really nice work in the early subs.
Taken under the lights during the Garden State Classic at Wall Stadium last Saturday evening. Nothing spectacular, just doing some high ISO work with the 7D.

After weeks of consideration and lots of questions asked i finally took the plunge and bought mt first L series lens, it arrived yesterday. I have to say I LOVE it, and can fully appreciate what all the fuss is about ;-)
I got the 70-200 F4 IS L, couldnt justifly the 2.8 and i understand that it is twice as heavy which wouldnt be good for me.
So todays pic is a quick play with the lens but I'm pretty pleased with the result.

00Yy7w-374609584.jpg.419e9010089ed8da640bc414cff22839.jpg

I spent an evening shooting polo and a day at Bovington Tank Museum for Tankfest last weekend. As I often show polo, I thought I'd offer something from Tankfest.
But as we've already had military stuff earlier, I think I'll offer this, which is from the World of Tanks gaming area.

As I mentioned at the end of last week's Thursday thread, I'll wait to make comments, so please check back in a day or two. It already looks like we are off to a great start this week.

Nathan, thanks for the info. That combo gives a pretty good working distance. I may try that sometime.

I found this wild mother turkey and brood crossing the Blue Ridge Parkway in the mountains of North Carolina. She waited at the edge of the road for a good bit before heading across. I was surprised to see the babies following her.

00Yy9Z-374657584.jpg.155f8b56825f6d578a815c2d640f8f1a.jpg
