The 550EX is likely to fire once and then lock up, requiring a reset. 2) The 199A was an auto flash with it's own flash sensor in the flash unit's body. The 550EX requires a Canon TTL or E-TTL capable camera to do any flash metering at all. So, if it worked, and it might, it would only work as a fully manual flash.
