Canon, Irvine, Service Center

I have a 5D I bought June '06. I noticed that I had dust on the inside

focusing screen all the air blasting couldn't remove and had specks on the

sensor window showing up in images.

I called VisibleDust in Canada and spoke with a very pleasant sales lady who

cleaning told me the 5D is notorious for having too much oil or whatever they

use on the mirror mechanism which when activated sprays the inside of the

chamber. She said later production models do not have this issue. I bought

their Arctic Butterly 724, swabs and cleaner but all I did was smear more junk

on the sensor window.

I live 20 miles from Irvine so yesterday I drove to the Canon Irvine Service

Center. The receiving tech told me to return that afternoon and they would

have my 5D cleaned. Since my camera was less than 1 year old there was no

charge. I believe most of us who bought the 5D received a $100 certificate for

non covered repairs when they bought their camera. Anyway..I picked my camera

up this morning. What a difference a day makes....

I just want to say to anyone who has this problem with their 5D or any DSLR

that my experience with Canon Irvine was great. My focusing screen, inside

compartment and sensor is spotless.

Thank you Canon Irvine.

I have had a great experience with Canon Irvine Service Center as well. My 420EX flash had battery corrosion and it was ruined. They fixed it with a fair price of $98.00 with 2 day shipping and it was handle fast and they did a wonderful job. I am glad to have bought a Canon system since their customer support and repair centers are so good.

I echo the same comments as Charles. I a camping excursion, I had my 5D and 30D

serviced at the Canon Irvine Center to clean the sensors. The cameras came back looking

brand new. What impressed me was that the Service Center took the time to clean the

entire camera in addition to the sensors.

Charles, where do you live? I live in Laguna Beach. The Canon Irvine Service Center is at the end of the Laguna Canyon Road and on my way to and from work. It could not be more convenient. I have had my 20D cleaned there and they did a great job. The auto focus module on my 24-70 f/2.8 L failed out of warranty and for a flat fee of $149, the service center replaced the module. The lens came out cleaned and in perfect condition on a one day turn around. You cannot tell that the lens was opened. A one day turn around is not promised, I think they over estimate the repair time.

They refused to service my son's video camera because it had water damage. They were fair and gave the repair a go but ultimately refused. He used the video cam for shooting surfing in the water with a water resistant housing - as a teenager at the time, he was not careful enough and allowed the camera to be contaminated with ocean water - deadly on electronics.

I am well pleased to date with the Canon folks in Irvine.
