rick_janes
Changing subjects, we are now back aboard Queen Mary 2 and in the process of rescuing solo yachtsman Mervyn Wheatley, whose boat Tamarind was disabled by a very powerful Atlantic storm. Tamarind was not easy to spot, she was often hidden entirely behind the ocean swells!
rick_janes
A Royal Canadian Air Force C-130 Hercules helped locate Mr. Wheatley and guide QM2 in.

rick_janes
After assessing the situation, Captain Wells brought QM2 to a stop and perpendicular to the very strong 50 knot winds. Having formed a lee, she was ballasted and her rescue boat lowered 27 meters into the sea...almost 90 feet. rick_janes
Mervyn Wheatley is that small orange figure on Tamarind. It's been almost 36 hours since the storm first capsized them and wrecked her steering mechanism. Sadly, she had to be scuttled to prevent becoming a hazard to navigation. He had owned her for 20 years and sailed almost 150,000 nautical miles.
rick_janes
This tanker had arrived the previous evening but she lacked the equipment to safely bring Mr. Wheatley up from Tamarind. He said there were some very tense moments as she drifted very close to his stricken boat. Eventually the tanker was ordered to move away by the patrol plane. rick_janes
Rescue boat ready to be hoisted up. I missed the actual transfer of Mr. Wheatley in moving to this better vantage point. QM2's a very big ship!
rick_janes
A great feeling of elation swept over QM2 after the successful rescue. Here, our stowaway pigeon celebrates with us by strutting about deck 7 aft. Wait...what?!? I first noticed this bird about a day west of Southampton, and so did other passengers who fed it. Some folks say it's a racing pigeon from the tagged leg? I'd seen him on the promenade deck during the big storm, huddled behind a planter box. But he made it! We think he left us during the stop in Halifax, so hopefully he found new friends.
