Canon FD Photo of the Month: August 2015

August! Hot! How about some hot photos, FD people! Note to newcomers: We include FL and earlier breach lock Canon SLRs and lenses. FD lenses on other bodies are welcomed.

I'll start out with some old, old long exposures made with a Canon EF and probably an FD 50/1.8. Film is Kodachrome 64. Exposure time is around 10 to 15 minutes. I gauged the time by setting the EF to 30 seconds and pushing the multi-exposure button when I rewound. I used a rickety Veblen tripod.

Here is the first.

00dPxa-557845384.jpg.3f302e2bb76da0f68d87e589e76d8912.jpg

Hi Alex,
I like the first shot particularly - the delivery van brake lights really activate it!
By coincidence, this month I had also planned to show an old night image from many years back - this is ALL multi-exposure on one single frame using the A-1's lever (no Photoshop here)...the tricky thing was remembering which bits of the frame I had already used. I wasn't sure what would be suitable for the all-important center and left it until last, but then found the "Tengu-san" restaurant sign which seemed to do the trick. Better than a dry-cleaning sign anyway!

I am so much enjoying all the Classic FD shown so far: Alex, you're bringing back fond memories of strolling SF

neighborhoods after dark, toting an F-1 with K64 and metal tripod, cold hands and reciprocity failure be damned!

Jim, where was that camera shop? I recall a similar Canon demo at Brooks Camera in SF. Ironically, most of the stuff

seen on the counter in your shot is on my shelf today: like the pair of FL Fluorites, 300/5.6 and 500/5.6! Those slick full

color Canon System brochures were free for a reason.

Rick, the camera shop was called Adray Camera, in Dearborn, Michigan. It was an absolutely superb full-featured camera shop where you could buy anything you could imagine. It was even quite successful in the digital/big-box store-era (great customer service), but the owner chose to retire, so it closed down a few years back.

All the manufacturers would send around factory reps in those days. Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Minolta, you name it. Besides sampling new equipment, there were also bargains to be had. I was in college then, and dead-broke, so I just stopped by to try the newest and latest stuff. Sadly, 1975 was the last time I held a FD24/1.4 lens.

Great shots this week, guys!

Jim, the colour rendition and dynamic range of that Ektar 100 is remarkable. I only wish that modern digital sensors had the same DR.

Anyway, I have several rolls of it in my fridge, and you've inspired me to load a roll into one of my Canon F-1's, which I haven't done in quite some time. Thanks!

It was during a Folkfest show, a pretty fun event overall.

One more from the Folkfest..this one is form the Taiwan dancing team.

Cannot recall the lens but probably the FD 200mm F2.8 since the 100mm and 400mm would have been very different from that section. :)
