User_502260
The chrome ring at the back of the SSC lens is used in mounting. It is tightened to secure the lens so it won't fall off of the camera while it is being used.
mark_pierlot
The 80-200/4 L is vastly optically superior to the non-L zooms, which I believe share the same optical formula.
rick_janes
Not the same optical formula, according to Canon: an original 80-200 twin-ring zoom has 15 elements in 11 groups, the later push-pull L type is 14 elements in 12 groups. The latter included fluorite as well.
User_502260
I think Mark meant that the two non-L lenses have the same optical formula, not that either of them shares the formula of the L lens.
mark_pierlot
Jeff's got it right. I meant that the two non-L zooms (SSC and FDn) have the same formula.

I had a 80-200/4 SSC and, as good as it was, it paled in comparison to the L.
Alex_Es
The L is a brilliant lens. The old double ring does hold its own. It is just that the L is in another universe.
cadillacmike
I like the twin ring non-L. It has been great, and costs a heck of a lot less now (I bought mine new so I paid the price, so to speak).
