awahlster
I had one for a while it's a capable little lens. But I would not rate it among Canons better zooms. It is a consumer grade lens along with the 35-70mm f3.5/4.5 nFD was Canons first bundled zooms with new bodies. Both of these lenses have the advantage of being very compact and lt. wt. the 28-85mm f4.0 and 35-105mm f3.5 are much better. It does show more distortion then I liked but it made a good snap shot lens.
joe chan
As Mark says, it is a very compact, lightweight zoom lens. I haven't tested it for distortion but I have often been impressed by its resistance to flare, even when the sun is included in the image:<div></div>
mark_stephan2
The lens I have is a nFD 28-55/3.5-4.5, I picked it up cheap. It is comparable to the 35-70/3.5-4.5 which I find very sharp for my use.
mark_pierlot
I know that the shorter non-L FD zooms are much maligned, but I have an FD 35-70mm 2.8-3.5 SSC and I find it to be a very fine lens. It's sharp at both the normal and macro ranges, and has very rich colour rendition. In my humble estimation, it's almost as good as the primes of its vintage. But I'm afraid I've never used the 28-55mm, which is an admittedly slower (and cheaper) lens.

doug_nelson3
See a test of (a sample of) this lens at http://members.aol.com/canonfdlenstests/default.htm As good (and cheap) as the 28 f2.8 SC, 35mm f2 (or f2.8 and 3.5) and any Canon 50mm are, I wouldn't buy this particular zoom. But then, I have a reverse fetish for distortion; I don't wanna see ANY.
