robert_tan1
Recently,i noticed that my pictures had black horizontal sections in it and on opening the camera,i noticed something were on the horizontal shutter blades or leaves. They were sticky stuff and i have no idea where it came from.Touching it with my clean fingertips,it was something black and really sticky like tar!I always opened my camera with clean hands and so,i proceeded to remove it with cotton ear bud dipped in rubbing alcohol. The first swipe was ok and the tip was full of this "tar".After drying the shutter,i snapped a few times and it re-appeared.I kept cleaning it a few times but it always returned.I also accessed the camera from the lens side, and after gently pushing up the SLR mirror, saw more "tar" on the lens side. After cleaning it,it reappeared. Something is leaking minute sticky tar onto the shutter blades and i don't know where.By the way,the green digital read out seemed spoilt too as i notice that the number like 6,8 and 9 are not identifiable.Could something be leaking chemicals inside my camera and how do i clean it? PuppyDigs
It took me a couple weeks of cleaning a little everyday to clean the goo from an old Elan. It worked fine for many years afterward. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
burachan40
I spent $100 (US) years ago to fix this exact problem on my 1000QD. The deal is some rubber stopper part of the shutter mechanism is going 'gooey' from age and requires replacement. The gummed up shutters also require replacement, hence the $100 repair bill. If the camera had no sentimental value, I would have tossed it and got a better replacement for just a little more money than fixing the one I had. But the camera was a gift from my father in law so I paid the repair guy to 'keep it in the family' as it were. I would recommend using this opportunity to get the used camera you have been yearning for rather than fixing this 'low-end' body. Brian
andys
My local independant retailer (in the UK) gets a few EOS 1000's through and sells them 2nd hand for about ?35. Their minimum repair charge is ?56 + parts. Time for a new body I think.
