railphotog
A seller on a local online site is offering a Canon Autoboy S XL film camera for sale. I don't have any interest in buying it, but am curious about the price he said he originally paid for it - $500.00+. I checked on several sites including eBay's completed auctions, did a Google search, and still can't find anything re the original cost of this camera. I can't imagine it actually costing this much when new, and suspect the seller is just inflating the cost to be able to sell the camera. He's asking $60.00 for it.

Any info on the original cost of the Canon Autoboy S XL?

Thanks!

Mike Gammill
Never heard of that model, but what are the specifications? Possibly it is an international name for a model sold in the USA. We sold Canon at the family camera store during the late 70's, 80's and early 90's so we have even stocked a model with those specs. FWIW, though, we never stocked any P&S that had $500+ price tag.
And here's a link that might be helpful: http://camerapedia.wikia.com/wiki/Canon_Sure_Shot_Z115_Panorama_%28Caption%29/Prima_Super_115N_%28Caption%29/Autoboy_S_XL
Mattman944
Considering that you can buy high quality film SLRs for under $50, I don't think you could get $20 for this camera.
JDMvW
In fact, many of the early EOS cameras with full AF, exposure, and so on, such as the EOS 620 are available for the body for even under $30. However, if you don't already have some EOS lenses, you'd have to figure in the cost of a lens for the body.

I don't know the camera either except that 'Autoboy' is the Japanese market version of the 'Sureshot' camera. I don't see a listing for an 'S XL' but there are versions with one or the other of those letters such as
http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/camera/film/data/1996-2000/1999_ab-s2xl.html?lang=jp&categ=srs&page=ab =Autoboy SiI XL (Japan) - SURE SHOT Z135 - PRIMA SUPER 135N
That one had a market price of 52,000 yen in 1999. At today's exchange rate that would be over US$600.

and an older possibility
http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/camera/film/data/1991-1995/1993_ab-s.html?lang=jp&categ=srs&page=ab
railphotog
JDM: Thanks for the link, I had also just found the mention on the Canon website at the same page for the S XL. The camera does seem to be a Japanese version, and lists at 45,000 yen. The Elph LT APS camera from the same year is listed at 23,500 yen; I have one, think I paid a bit over $200 Cdn for mine. So the Autoboy could possibly be twice as costly, or around $400-450.00. Still short of the $600.00 the seller claims he paid for the Autoboy.

andrewg_ny
It's probably a nice enough P&S, and possibly sold for approaching what the seller says (including tax, batteries, and bag?) but under its Sureshot Z115 name, it sells regularly for $5-10 on ebay.

Too many cameras like this on the market now, the only ones that sell for a little more money have prime lenses or particularly nice lenses/construction, nameplates like Leica or Contax, or rare manual control.
janne_moren
Thanks for bringing this up. I received a Canon Autoboy 2 QD from a relative some time ago, and always meant to look it up. That Canon site link was perfect. I have to take it out for a spin one of these days.
