Canon A1: Film advance lever stuck, shutter won't press, LED info missing

The title says it all really. I just received a Canon A1 I purchased off eBay, which is in seemingly perfect condition. When it arrived, I realised I forgot to buy the specific battery, so had to wait a few days for one of those. In that time, I was testing things out to see if everything worked. I pulled on the film advance lever, which worked fine, but after that, it has been getting stuck half way. I have only been able to pull it all the way after switching on the double exposure toggle, but that does not advance the film, and every time after that, it gets stuck. When I pressed the shutter button, nothing happened, but I figured that was due to the fact that I didn't have a battery.

I bought a Kodak 4LR44 28A 6V battery, hoping that would change things, but it didn't. The shutter does not fire, the lever still gets stuck, and film does not advance. Also, when I press on the shutter, nothing happens, and there is no LED information inside the viewfinder. Would that mean that this is a battery problem, or something greater?

It's pretty sad because I was really looking forward to getting into film photography after using DSLR cameras for so long, and I'm pretty young so this is all new to me. I'm not sure if I did something wrong. Is there a simple solution to this, or does it need to get taken into the shop? Any suggestions?

The camera has to be on. Top left lever should expose a white dot. The top right side lever should show the "A" inside the little window. The lens cap should be off and the meter active. Point the camera at a normally lit area. Wind and release the shutter. That is how mine works. Edited by danac
