benbangerter
I just received a B&H catalog (Summer 2006) that shows this lens, with the following brief description: * Exclusively designed for use with Digital SLR* 2 ED glass and 3 aspherical lens elements* 3.5-22 f/Stop Range* Focus 1.6' to infinity* 72mm filter diameter* Dimensions 3 x 3.8"* Weight 19.8 oz. The picture is small, so it is hard to see much. The lens is black (so not an L?), with a gold ring (USM indicator?). No price is listed. This is the first mention I have seen of this lens, and a Google search turns up only the now discontinued 80-200/2.8L (including a Bob Atkins review of same). It is not shown on the Canon USA or GB web sites. Anyone know anything about this lens?
carlos_santos2
Which is it? f/2.8? or "3.5-22 f/Stop Range"... ?
PuppyDigs
Isn't ED glass a Nikon trade term? Canon uses terms like UD, AL, FL for it's special glass elements. The specs appear to be a bunch of typos. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
bobatkins
It's a misprint or you aren't reading it right! An f2.8 lens can't have an f3.5-22 f-stop range. Canon lenses don't have "ED" or "D" in their names either. The EF 80-200/2.8L was black with a red band, but hasn't been made in many years and certainly wasn't "designed for digital SLRs" as it was discontinued before they arrived on the scene. Scan (or shoot) and post the image of the ad if you want more comments. B&H haven't sent be that catalog yet!
bobatkins
OK, I just got the catalog. It's a total screw up! The image is of a Canon 100/2.8 USM macro lens. The only lens in the Canon lineup that has a 3.5-22 aperture range is the 180/3.5 Macro, but it's bigger and weighs more than the listed specs. If you look at the page (p124), you'll see all three lenses at the bottom of the page have exactly the same (WRONG) specs listed. Someone screwed up in proofreading. They have similar specs (aperture, weight, filter size, ED and Aspherical elements, focus range) for the Nikon DX 18-200/3/5-5.6 G AF-S ED-IF lens too. I suspect that's where it may have come from. benbangerter
Thanks for clearing this up, Bob. If I had read the page more carefully, I could have answered my question and saved you the trouble! Sorry.
bobatkins
Don't worry, I'm sure you won't be the last to ask about this lens!
