Returned it to the shop (Ken Ruth, Photography on Bald Mountain), and it was rectified without comment. I get the impression that it is not an elaborate problem to fix, but should be done professionally. If the camera has not been serviced recently, it can probably be fixed without adding much to the normal clean-lubricate-adjust, which an old camera needs anyway.
