Canon 40D Exp.SIM icon info

Do you know where can I find information about the Exp.SIM icon when at Live View?

I have seen it:

1.- bright white steady, that seems to be the normal state

2.- bright white blinking, sometimes

3.- faded white (grey) when flash pop-up or more than two stops of overexposure

in Manual mode

Where is this "Exp.SIM icon"? I can't find it?

The "Exp.SIM" (EXPosure SIMulation) is on the left, abobe the battery and the picture style icons. Maybe you have to press the INFO button to see it and the histogram etc.

You can see it on page 112 of the manual, there it says that the histogram grays out when using flash or bulb is set, but says nothing about the at least 3 states of the ExpSIM icon (white, blink, gray)

Sometimes when you point the camera to a dark subject it begins blinking but I can not find out a rule for this behaviour.
