35mmdelux
After what seems ages I finally snagged a Canon 35mm f/2.0 LTM for a reasonable price. Looking forward to shooting with this creature. Post'em if you got'em. I'll post in a few weeks as mine is in the mail!

frederick_muller
As a bit of a comparison, this was shot on a film camera with a 5cm f1.4 Nikkor, the same field of view as the Canon 35mm f2 on the RD-1s ...

frederick_muller
There is sample variation in this lens. I have one that is as good as a Type 4 Summicron. And another that is better :-)

frederick_muller
I saw the old man and his wife sitting on the bench with the young guys. The old lady was lying with her head on the old man's lap, and the pair of them looked utterly exhausted. The RD-1s exposed for the surrounding area, but the old couple were lit by a beam of sunlight coming through the trees and they whited out in a strange glow. Not what I intended, but I really like it.

35mmdelux
Thank you for posting, Frederick. You mentioned this lens a few years ago and I finally found one that wasnt over-the-top pricing. Amazing for 45 yr old lens. I wanted something more compact than my 35 Summilux asp. for everyday street.
Regards - Paul
frederick_muller
Paul, I suspect once you try it, you will have a hard time taking it off your camera. It works well for both film and digital, and it is scary sharp. A lot of lens in such a small package!
35mmdelux
The bench foto shows striking sharpness. Ive had a long run with 35 Crons and Summiluxes. I'm ready to give the Canon a test drive. (savings is nice too).
jim_bielecki1
Had one a few years back, but sold it. Nice and sharp, even wide-open, but with terrible fish-scale type bokeh (highlights in the background). Still, a nice, compact lens.

Jim B.
frederick_muller
There's bokeh and then there's bokeh. Check out this one, and compare the out of focus areas to the 04:34 post. They were taken from roughly the same angle, so the backgrounds are comparable ...

frederick_muller
I wish I'd had the Type 4 "Bokeh King" with me to shoot the same subject. The Type 4 is also one of my favorites, but I honestly don't see why it's called "The King". Its out-of-focus rendition has never struck me as anything special. Not nearly as smooth as something like the 50mm pre-ashph lux, to my eye.

john_shriver
There are apparently two optical formulas for this lens -- reports are they don't look the same.
I'm happy with my Canon 35/1.8. Haven't suffered flare problems with it.
frederick_muller
This thread shows the block diagrams for the two versions of the 35mm f2

http://www.photo.net/leica-rangefinders-forum/00JVd2

Both of mine are the first version, so I have no direct experience of the second version. If it is better than the first, look out!

The 35mm f1.8 is also excellent; I find it can exhibit wonderful glow.
