rachelle_m.
Hello Everyone, I've finally reached the point where I've realised that I need to start investing time (and some money) into really learning flash photography. I currently shoot mostly with a 35mm Nikon setup, which includes an SB-28 flash. In terms of medium format film I am shooting with a variety of TLRs, mostly Autocords and Yashicas. I've done a lot of reading but I'm getting quite confused with hot and cold shoes, sync cords, and pc connectors. Obviously the TLRs have cold shoes and no pc connectors, what I want to know is if it is possible to attach a modern flash to one of these cameras and if so, what equipment do I need exactly to do this? I'm hoping to use the flash off camera (with a sync cord) or with a bracket, mostly for portrait work. If it's not possible to use my SB-28 then what flash would you recommend? I'd be looking for something used and cheap(ish). I know that people have recommended potato masher-style flashes but my research only seems to come up with expensive ones. I know this is kind of a newbie question but I just want to make sure I'm on the right track before I go and order from BH or Adorama! Cheers all. picturesque
I don't know about the Autocord or Yashica, but my Mamiya C330f has PC ports on the lenses. And if your SB-28 has a PC outlet, all you need do is to put the PC cord from the flash into the PC port on the lens, and you should be able to use the auto thyristor function on the SB. If the SB has no PC outlet, you can get an adapter for it, which is inexpensive. If your cameras don't have PC ports on the lenses (I'd be surprised if they don't), then you won't have a way of syncing any flash to them. Auto thyristor is an older flash metering system--if you have your manual, you should be able to find out how to set the flash to that mode. Gary Naka
The TLRs do indeed have a flash sync connector, you just need to look at the camera and find it. It might not be a PC connector, and if so you will need to find an adapter. You can find the handle mounts on eBay for reasonable prices. But since you have the SB28, just use that. jimmy_english
Rachelle: A more direct and I hope helpful respone: This is the outfit I have just completed & am starting to use with the Yashica. On a previous post I asked about an inexpensive flash for the Yashica & among the responses was one suggesting a Vivitar 252. I purchased one on *bay for less than $5.00. I also purchased 2 optical slaves for $10.00 each. The diffusers came from Walmart @ 3 for $2.39 plus some cutting & gluing velcro strips. I already had the Sunpak handle mount flashes (about $35.00 ea). The flash mounts on the cold shoe of the Yashica and has a sync cord that attaches to the recipticle on the camera. I had to use needle nose pliars to alter the plastic foot so that it would slide into the shoe from the front as it was made to slide in from the back. I taped some exposed film over the flash tube so the Vivitar only acts as a trigger for the optical slaves. I'm buying 2 light stands tomorrow (cheap ones). This 2 light set up is what I think you were asking about. It will cost less than $140.00 in total.
