ward
Is that self-explanatory? If my computer is already running and I power up the scanner, is there a way to avoid having to reboot the computer to have them chit-chat with each other? In the old windows, there was a Refresh Hardware option in hardware manager. Thanks.
digitmstr
I have WIN-XP and an Epson V750 PRO. WHen I turn the scanner ON the comptuer doesn't have to do a thing. If the drivers are properly written and installed there should be no need to re-boot and/or refresh the hardware.
ward
Interesting. When I try to use the scanner without rebooting, it will not recognize the scanner.
cbender
Is it a SCSI scanner? If so, you must turn the scanner on before powering the computer. This is because the SCSI card has to detect the hardware in the SCSI BIOS. USB should not require a reboot.
wogears
Right click your USB/SCSI/FireWire controller in Device Manager. Choose "Scan for Hardware Changes". You got it!
leicaglow
Ward, With modern equipment, usually there's a device controller that can be loaded in the system tray. Double clicking on it will bring up a control panel where you can connect to it (sometimes right-clicking on it). If you don't have it, check with Minolta, or even reload the software. richard_roggow
XP with Dimage Scan Dual here. Don't use the scanner much any more. But I have always had to so a reboot when the scanner is powered on (XP). Tried the scan for new hardware trick (I think it used to work in Win2000 if I remember right). From What I searched on the web about this topic (quite a while ago) it depended on the SCSI controller if you could get it to work with the Scan for hardware changes trick. I beleive my SCSI card is a cheap Adaptec 15xx series card.
troyammons
Hmmm, I have a 5400II and I can turn it on after boot, but it initializes when the software is started. Maybe yours is different.
kelly_flanigan1
With all my scsi scanners on PC's I must turn on the scanner, then boot up the computer, whether they are 15 years old or 1 year old. The computer reads the scsi ID during boot, and sees it as a device.

Folks not booting their computers, not setting the USB/scsi switch, not terminating, multiple devices configured to use the same ID are the bulk, say 99 percent of scsi "help me" calls by field service operators.

ted_marcus1
I use Deon van der Westhuysen's RescanHardware with my Canon FS4000US on XP Pro. I turn on the scanner only when I'm about to use it. I run RescanHardware, and then start up VueScan. Works every time.
ward
Les gets the prize! He was right on the money. I thank you all and move on with my day, beaming as joyfully as only one who doesn't really have a life can beam in response to trivial triumphs. byronlawrence
as a throw in,, sometimes with xp all you have to do is log off and then log back on to 'reboot' but I don't know if it would apply for your case.
