skinny_mcgee
Hello, is the Calumet llex wide angle 90mm F8, the same angle of view as the 90mm F8 Schneider SW? ThanksSkinny
louie_powell1
Kerry Thalmann's artical in the May/June 2003 View Camera lists the Ilex-Caltar 90mm f8 (1965-77) with a 100 deg angle of coverage. It give the same angle of coverage for the Caltar-S II (1976-83) 90mm f8 which was identical to the Schneider lens of the same specification. leonard_evens
For any specific format, the angle of view is determined from the focal length by a trigonometric formula. It has nothing to do with the particular lens. All lenses of the same focal length used with the same format have the same angle of view. Coverage angle is another matter. See the reference to Kerry Thalmann for information about image circle for the lenses you are interested in. Coverage tells you how much you can shift the frame within a larger image circle. Different lenses of the same focal length will often have different size image circles and so different coverage angles. Strictly speaking, the frame (format) size and its position within the image circle change slightly when you shift the frame. It is only when the frame is centered in the image circle that the stated angle of view is correct. But in practical situations, this doesn't make a whole lot of difference.
