Buying Nikon in Hong Kong

When I visited Hong Kong there was a huge choice - no need to pre arrange, rather shop around. Try and get International or warranty that covers yours country.

About 8 months ago I started a thread about a similar issue. Hong Kong has tons of camera shops that blast "Nikon" "Canon" in neon lights. They are everywhere, but many of them are not to be trusted. READ this thread

Fred, It is not possible to get an international warranty on any Nikon digital

SLR, scanner etc in Hong Kong, even from authorised Nikon dealers, and

despite what they might say. Nikon's corporate policy is that digital products

are covered by warranty only in the country of purchase. Film SLR cameras

have international warranties yes, but not digital SLR cameras.

 

If the camera you want is in high demand, then the HK prices will be

absolutely top and might not be much better than in your country. Also, they

simply might not have any stock. This is very likely for the D2X in March.

 

You could try to organise one before you go but you will have to pay in full or

they simply will not hold it. In addition, the dealers cannot take credit cards

over the phone or by fax/mail. Because of the level of fraud, the card

companies will not permit it. That means that you would have to pay by direct

deposit to the dealer's local bank account or by sending a banker's draft/bank

cheque by registered mail.

 

One of the better authorised Nikon dealers is located in the basement of the

Holiday Inn Golden Mile in Nathan Road (can't remember the name). Two

other reputable dealers are Kinefoto in Stanley Street central and Francisco

Photo in Lock Road, Kowloon, behind the Hyatt hotel. Both of those dealers

readily speak English.

my dad made a lot of grey market purchase with coxell and very happy with them. if the camera fail within a year, you can give them back and they'll send that to japan for repair. that takes longer, but works. this shop is quite reliable, although their website isn't.

they 've good price too, but they are not traditional camera shop, so they don't 've many lens.

while other shops are selling fuji s3 pro for around USD$2380 to $3782, they are selling it at $2217, or 2025 for grey market.

 

we got D100, D70 and many P&S(purchase for families/friends) from them

well.... i'm going to their shop in a few days.... not for a D2x or any other dslr body (i can always get grey market easily in hong kong), but a canon 500D 77mm closeup filter!(can't find it anywhere in hong kong!)

As previously mentioned, there is no need to set the deal up beforehand, the only thing I would say is to stay WELL clear of Tsim Sha Tsui, especially Nathan Rd (the golden mile), instead go where the locals go - Mong Kok, it is easy to reach by MTR, there are many dealers there, much more reputable and all open late. You can also take a look at Sham Shui Po, it has to be seen to be believed - you will be in Tech Heaven! I would suggest taking a day or so, notebook & map in hand, buy a "Rough guide" or "Lonely Planet" before you go;

HK is a great town, easy to navigate, safe, and GREAT food. Just remember to take the same precautions you would in any big city, and you will have a whale of a time, and score a cheap DSLR to boot!

<p>There are a few very professional and honest shops around HK, in an ocean of less honest ones. As mentioned before, Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po are more likely to offer stores that dont pray on unexperienced tourists to the same extent.<br>

Avoid TST and Nathan Rd. There are a few ok ones in Central as well, Kinephoto and "Photo scientific" are 2. Second hand stuff can be found at some locations also, Ting Cheung in TST (one of the few honest ones in that area) sell new as well as used equipment.<br>

So do <em>Hing Lee </em>on Lyndhurst Terrace, but they have a quite nasty reputation of stealing drop-in tourists money, or selling items of questionable quality for high price. Avoid them.</p>
