geoffs1
I occasionally need to trigger my 20D and/or 40D from a distance of about 200-300 feet. Can anyone suggest a good remote trigger system that doesn't cost much? (~$50). Wired is OK, and I can make my own cable if it uses standard connectors.
NK Guy
If wired is OK you can just splice a roll of ordinary two-conductor (or three-conductor if you want to support half-press to focus and meter) wire into a regular cable release.
geoffs1
I could splice a long piece of wire into a cheap release, but I was wondering if there were any limitations on length with that approach (voltage drop, etc.).

A couple of items that look promising are:

Vivitar Series 1 Wireless 2-in-1 Shutter Release

ZigView Seculine Twin1 R3max, Infrared Wireless

steven_f1
I don't think a 300 foot cable is going to have any significant voltage drop on it. The only way to know for sure is to try it. I cannot comment on the wiresless options you find since I haven't used any. But in all likelyhood the wireless option will probably cost more than a hand made cable. So my advice is try making your own cable and if that dosn't work go wireless.
railphotog
I have a radio remote I picked up on eBay for under $25.00, instructions claim it is good up to 300 feet in the clear, 100 feet indoors. I've never tried it at either range, but at the price it might be worth a try.

jim_newman5
I bought one on ebay a year or so ago. I looked for it when I read your post but I can't find the name of the vendor. Vendor was in Hong Kong and it was cheap (less than $25 as I recall). It works surprisingly. I can't say it would reach 200' but I suspect it would.
The brand name is "Aputure" model AP-WR3C. Try Googling it.
sarah_fox
Geoff, Pocket Wizards are a bit over your stated budget, but probably well worth it for what you're doing (considering you can use them for flashes too). They're good for about 1600 ft range and will trigger either flashes or shutter releases.
railphotog
Sorry, I don't recall the eBay seller's name. I believe the remote was a Phottix, there are many listed, just to an eBay search on radio remotes.
geoffs1
Thanks everybody. It looks like eBay is the way to go. Somehow I keep forgetting to check there for stuff like this.
