jim_appleyard
I just bought a new 40 f/4 PE lens for my Bronica 645. I have noticed that the negs are a little soft in the corners. It isn't bad, just a whisker soft and it really is WAY up in the corners. The center of each neg is sharp and so are the edges at the center. Is this normal for this lens or any lens this wide? I did some test shots of a brick wall (I know it isn't scientific, but we use what's at hand) using a tripod with bubble levels, mirror l/u and cable release and no filter on the front of the lens. Apertures used were f/5.6, 8 and
frank_kimble
Is it enough to show in a print? My labs alway seem to crop out a little image all the way around the neg.
jim_appleyard
It probably would not show in a lab print, but it might show in a print from my darkroom. You know how all that cropping stuff goes.
chip l.
I have the 40MC, and don't find it soft in the corners wide open. Could be a bad sample. You can try another one from your dealer to see if it was a bad sample.
calvin_lee
During the time I had my ETRSi, I also had the 40mm MC lens. I found it to be very soft & low in contrast compared to my Mamiya 45mm & 35mm lenses that I had for my 645 Super. I always used a lens hood, too. I eventually sold the 40mm MC lens because I found it a little too soft for my taste. I was under the impression that the newer PE version had addressed much of this problem. lee_frost
A 'wisker' soft on brick walls ? Could as suggested be a tad poor sample but I bet you would never see it in any other photo, so why worry about it ?
