Borderless printing Photoshop / Epson 1280

Recommended Posts

An image size in photoshop of 6.742 x 10.7 prints at 7.125 x 11 with

no borders set in both the Photoshop setup and the printer setup. If

I choose ANYTHING else, it is truncated at the top and bottom.

I want to printer borderless at the top so this is a given. It is

almost as if the Photoshop/Epson driver doesn't calculate the

increased size correctly and is still using a border. The preview in

the Epson drive shows the truncation correctly (ie, is a true

rendition of what is printed).

Please tell me that there is something stupid I have not looked at...

Margins are zero, but I did not have 'fit to page'. I will try that. I DID try that in FilmFactory, where a similar problem occured yesterday (ie, after I posted the question) and it fixed the problem, but I DO NOT UNDERSTAND why, this is necessary.

If Photoshop shows an image size of 11 x ?, what does it print at? When fit to media is selected, it shows as 97% fit. This is a 0.3" difference I agree. I have not tried it with photoshop to see if I get borderless and the net size is 11 x ? (ie, the full length is used and the width is scaled to the image size within photoshop/Image size)

Is it that the Epson 1280 cannot print borderless (ie, 8 1/2 x 11) or that Photoshop OR the driver doesn't know the size of paper to make a decision as to the size within photoshop..

Very confused. I will try the printer/fit to media option tonight, but I don't understand the relationship between the FINAL print and what Photoshop and the printer setup says..

Thanks for the reply.

Hmmm, I've also been having problems with borderless ('no margins') printing

on an Epson 890.

I'm printing on A4 (21cm x 29.7cm) premium glossy. If in Photoshop I size the

image to exactly A4 dimensions, and then check 'no margins' in the Epson

print driver, I do get a borderless print, but the edges of the image (3 or 4

mm on each side) have been cropped out. It seems that when you check 'no

margins' the Epson driver automatically enlarges the image.

My current workaround is to add some dead space around the A4 image (a 3

or 4 mm border using 'canvas size' in Photoshop), and then resize (using

'image size') back down to A4. This image will now print borderless, without

any of the image data being cropped off. Seems like a lot of unnecessary

upsampling/downsampling - but it does work, and with a Photoshop action it

would be relatively painless...

Subject: Response to Borderless printing Photoshop / Epson 1280

Thank you all for your responses. I have now gone though 36+ combinations of settings for the printer for 8.5x11 paper and note the following:

1) No margins is actually not a supported feature in the 'help' file for "Premium Glossy", the nearest size being 8x10

2) Actually 'No Margins' and 'Borderless' do not intersect in the help file. No Margins is defined as reducing the margins (Standard) from 14mm to 3mm (minimum). 'Borderless' is not defined.

3) There is a warning under 'maximum' about the software 'expanding' the image and something may be lost. I find that wierd...but it may explain just why the results are not very consistent in the 36+ examples I see.

4) 'Fit to Media' always gets all the information on the page, but the 3mm minimum margin is respected.

5) If one combines the 'fit' menu in the Photoshop and the drive menu, one gets increased margins.

6)One cannot select 'user defined' paper becuase that is not selectable with 'borderless'. All other settings respect the margin/printable area.

7) So the only thing one can do is to select 'borderless', and has been note, expand/contract the print so that the inherent expansion of the print is white space. One cannot do that with 'Canvas' as that does not appear to be printable. So one has to do an interpolation/compression to get it to work.

The question I have here is does ANYONE have a method that works without doing and expansion/contraction before printing ? I wonder if anyone has contacted Epson to find out if this is a feature or 'bug' ? Do most people leave the 3mm margin for mounting anyway ?

My thanks to all

Hi, I've been doing some more tests with 'no margins' printing, and I've

realised that the solution I described above (adding a white border with

Photoshop's 'canvas size' option) is unnecessarily complicated.

As stated above, when 'no margins' is selected in the Epson print driver, the

image size is increased by about 2.5% along both the width and the height of

the image. So if you have already sized your image to the paper size (e.g.

8"x10"), then you will find that the resulting borderless image has some

image data missing around the edges.

To remedy this you should make the image a bit smaller than 8"x10" (about

2.5% smaller). If you want to be precise, then start with an image size of say

7"x9". Print it (with 'no margins' checked) on 8"x10" paepr and examine the

results - there will still be a border. Increase the image size a little bit and

print again. Keep on doing this until you have eradicated all borders (adjust

the width and height separately - have 'constrain proportions' unchecked).

This took me 8 prints (of an image with lots of fine detail on the edges to aid

assesment). And so now I know that if I want to print a borderless A4 image,

with no loss of image data, then I need to start with an image of dimensions

2910 px (w) x 4114 px (h), at 360 dpi.

I'm not sure if this any help Michael, as I'm not sure I've fully understood your

problem (what is it you're trying to do?). As for some of the points you made:

'1) No margins is actually not a supported feature in the 'help' file for

"Premium Glossy", the nearest size being 8x10'

I'm using Premium Glossy, and it seems to work.

'2) Actually 'No Margins' and 'Borderless' do not intersect in the help file. No

Margins is defined as reducing the margins (Standard) from 14mm to 3mm

(minimum). 'Borderless' is not defined.'

With my printer - an Epson 890 which is called something else in the US, but

which is the small version of the 1280/90 - to achieve 3mm borders you select

'maximum' in the 'Page Set-Up' menu - and also 'centred' if you want to avoid

getting a bigger border at the bottom of the page.

'3) There is a warning under 'maximum' about the software 'expanding' the

image and something may be lost. I find that wierd...but it may explain just

why the results are not very consistent in the 36+ examples I see.'

The warning I get when checking 'maximum' is that with certain papers the

edges of the image may be smeared. There is nothing about 'expanding' the

image - and this should not happen when selecting 'maximum'.
