Black tie event- Attire for female photographer?

I am shooting a black tie event this weekend, and was wondering what people recommended female photographers wear. Black pantsuit?

An outfit that fits the level of dress. For a woman, this means cocktail dress, gown, or dressmaker type suit. A business suit is also acceptable. Pant suits are not considered black tie. However, you are the hired photographer, not a guest, so you can probably get away with that. As long as you don't show up in a sweatsuit or really casual outfit... Personally, I wear a skirt as part of a dressmaker or business suit.

long black skirt, white or light coloured shirt, a black waistcoat, hair and makeup tastefully applied. if you are carrying heavy gear, comfort levels need to be taken into consideration. wear sensible closed shoes, not trainers.

What exactly is a dressmaker suit? Would a black dress be appropriate?

A dressmaker suit is one that is tailored, has a skirt as one piece, and a blouse, and a jacket which is not like the regular business suit (man style). Think Chanel suit. A black dress is suitable, but may be difficult to work in--up to you.

I always wear black dresses or shirt/skirts to events. Just make sure they are long enough I prefer mid calf. I tend to do a

bit of bending over, standing on ladders and laying on the ground in my photography and I don't need to give anybody a
