Best Scanner for monitor web viewing

What is the best film scanner for scanning B+W and colour negatives

that will only be looked at on a monitor and on the web, and not be

used for printing. I print on an enlarger (sorry), but like to scan

negatives to assess on my monitor.

What do you want to "assess" (eg sharpness or simply image?) and what size film?

 

If you don't need to "assess" sharpness and especially if you do want to work with multiple formats, many flatbeds will do the deed.

To clarify, I would like to mainly scan 35mm film and slides to assess composition, sharpness, etc., prior to printing on an enlarger.

If you're not too fussy about cleaning, and/or your film is fairly clean, the Minolta Scan Dual IV is quite cheap but capable of very decent scan. Especially just for assesment. No ICE though: if your needs/expectations change, this would be a shortcoming.

<a href="http://www.photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=420914">Some images scanned on Scan Dual IV</a>, mostly slide, some C-41. I find the Scan Dual is sharper and delivers better detail in dense areas than my flatbed, but it doesn't do 120 or 4x5.

If you want digital proof sheets, a flatbed with a big light source would be the fastest way to go.
