vicky2
I have been doing SLR photography at an amatuer level for 8 years, but now looking to become a professional. Although I'm definitely not a beginner - I am also definitely not a professional, and there is still quite a bit I need to learn about digital photography (had film until last year), lighting, flash, etc. Can anyone recommend some good resources (books, sites, magazines) for someone at my level? I am especially interested in magazines to subscibe to as the web is a bit overwhelming and books are more expensive. I'm looking to get into any photography having to do with people... wedding, fashion, event, etc. Thank you so much for your help!

puck
hi thereperhaps you are a lot more experienced than i am. after looking through the magazine racks here in UK i have found PRACTICAL PHOTOGRAPHY to be the most useful. it does have a very simple approach and caters for beginners to intermediates.i believe there is a website as well which you might find doing a google search.best regardspuck
eye-of-searle
Yeah, the UK magazines are pretty good for tips, tricks, technigues, critiques, etc. I get Practical Photgraphy and Photography Monthly. They are not cheap here in the US but they are better than the US Crap magazines.
ellis_vener_photography
Given your interests: I recommend "Professional Photographer" ( http://www.ppmag.com ) (where I am a technology editor) published by the CPi/PPA organization; and also "Rangefinder". roger_kallet
If you're on speaking terms with Photoshop, one of the best magazines is Photoshop User magazine. You can buy it at the newsstands, and it comes along with a membership in the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP). You don't have to be a professional to belong. Another recommend is Shutterbug.
DWScott
One of the best resources I have ever found: http://www.strobist.blogspot.com/ The tutorials are great. Very inspirational, and grounded in reality. Teaches how to use flash to get fast, repeatable, quality work. The author is a working photog who needs to get good looking headshots and editorial photos, on a tight schedule.
david_schwartz6
the best photo magazines are ones that do not give you tips as such - IMHO - but make you think differently about photography. The best of this genre is Lenswork. Highly recommended -- you will get some technical information, particularly in the interviews of profiled photographers -- but the most important things to learn are not technical at all! patflynn
Experience is always the best teacher, so while you are reading the resources described above, do remember that a huge advantage of digital photography is the opportunity to see your shots right away, and to learn on the spot (or very soon after). Plus you can just delete your mistakes, so do be proactive in teaching yourself what the magazines advise and suggest. Good luck in going pro.
