randleman
Hello all,

I'm heading to Maui next week for a week - my first travel ever to Hawaii! I should have plenty of time to shoot and explore, but I was hoping for some "don't miss' recommendations.
I've read about the road to Hana and the summit of Haleakala, but any specific advice on these or other locations would be most appreciated.

Also, I've read that this is a good time of year to go whale watching - does anyone have experience with this, and is it generally worthwhile?

Thanks in advance,
Brad
Dieter Schaefer
If you haven't already - get this travel guide: http://www.wizardpub.com/maui/maui.html
Sunrise and sunset on Haleakala - be prepared for a long drives in the dark for either - and dress warmly, and I mean down jacket not just a sweater. Hiking into the crater is rewarding but strenuous because of the elevation; also, it seems to be close to some of the cones in the crater - but distances are larger than you think. And there is no shade - bring sunscreen.
Road to Hana - best explored if you plan on staying in Hana for a night - then you can beat traffic the next morning and have many sights to yourself (or almost) for a few hours. Access to a few of the sights is through private property and might be impossible - check at the above website for latest updates.
Driving around the south side of the island might interest you; it's rugged country and when visibility is good, you can see the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea on the Big Island.
It's winter so Jaws might be active and open - goggle for information. AFAIK, the access road is closed unless there is surf activity.
danny_low
The Iao Valley State Park is easy to get to and you can photograph its famous waterfall with an easy walk from the parking lot.

Sunrise and sunset at Haleakala will depend on the weather. If the top is clouded, you will see nothing. If it is clear you can get some spectacular shots. However the best shots are when it is clouded but the clouds clear at sunrise because you are on top of the parting cloud layer. I second the warning that it is cold up there at night. The temperature normally drops below freezing at night. It will be well after sunrise before the temperature rises above freezing.

Danny Low
randleman
Thanks to all for the advice! I did pick up the travel guide and found it quite helpful. I also traveled to Hana both directions - I actually preferred the back stretch more - quiet, rugged countryside.

I would also highly recommend whale watching to anyone traveling during the winter months - we had a particularly good day from what I've heard, but it was an absolutely amazing experience!
