Best lens for product shots

  1. I wanted to get some recommendations on a lens for the Canon EOS 5D. I will be
    shooting product shots of mp3 players and laptop computers. Most shots will be
    done in a light tent with a white back ground. I would like to have the
    greatest flexibility possible for razor sharp focus and depth of field. Any

  2. Traditionally, product photography is done using a view camera, as the controls give one command of perspective and the location of the plane of best focus.

    If you want to use the 5D, you could consider the three tilt-shift lenses that Canon offers. They have a small subset of the controls of a view camera. Which focal length you choose for a shot will be determined by the kind of perspective you want -- or what the agency's art director wants.
  3. No one will even notice if you use cheap digital camera :)
  4. My favorite lens for shots of products such as these is the Canon 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro.

    There are two lenses in the Canon range suitable for these criteria:

    1. 45mm TS-E

    2. 24mm TS-E (possibly, may be too wide for smaller objects such as MP3 Players}

    As previously mentioned: a View [or Field] camera would be suitable and perhaps easier.

    But are the criteria yours or a super critical client? What is your end product requirement? You might be placing technical parameters on yourself your client does not require whereby a lens already in your kit bag used surreptitiously at F16 might suffice.

  6. I use a 5D with the 90mm TS-E and 45mm TS-E lenses for most of my product work.
