Beginner's Filter Question

Despite what Peter Evans' first link says, B+W make excellent filters that do not vignette. Avoid Tiffen. The best brands are B+W, Heliopan, and Hoya in that order. Hoya filters are surprisingly good for the cost, but the multi-coated type get dirty very easily. However you can pop the filter glass out of the ring, wash under warm water with regular soap, rinse thoroughly and then dry with a microfiber towel and the filter will be perfect.

I bought a used Hoya HMC multicoated filter for a 21mm lens for $10 from B&H recently as an experiment. The glass looked terrible but I treated it as above, it looks new now and no vignetting on the 21mm!
