Banff..Evening shots Vs Morning shots

I am off to Banff/Yoho for the July 4th weekend. Most of the good

stuff lies to the west of the Icefields parkway (Moraine Lake, Lake

Louise, Peyto Lake..etc)so I suppose they are all early morning

subjects.<br> I will have 2 sunrises and 3 sunsets during my

stay..question is - which are the evening shots, and which ones are

definitely morning ones ? Thanks.

I did an assignment round Banff/Lake Louise/Jasper a few years

ago in July. All my best shots are in the mornings. You're going

to need to choose from these for the prime dawn times though of

course you could photograph decently -if not optimally - a little

later than dawn at a second/third location. Add Bow Lake from

the north-east corner to your list.

Places like Vermillion Lakes where there are not fixed viewpoints

offer a bit more scope for late pm shots, and there are some

quite scenic lakes to the east of the main road near Banff (Jack

Lake??? etc)

Take insect repellent- there were clouds of them round the water

especially at Vermillion Lakes and I was even getting bitten in my

hotel.

The lakes are very still most mornings...which is generally a good thing. Wild Goose Island on St. Marys Lake (east side) is beautiful in the evenings. The wildflowers should be really good about now. Check out the east approach of Going to the Sun Hwy, and of course Logan Pass.

First, Goose Island and Going to the sun highway are in the US - Glacier National Park.

The weather is as important as the sun angle. This year it's been cloudy about 80% of the days. I've spent my time shooting closed forest and waterfalls both are great when it's cloudy. No use trying to get great landscapes up there when it's raining or all gray.

The flowers are a little behind this year - good new for you. If thhe air ever warms up the flowers at the higher elevations will really pop! The bear grass is coming. The balsom is done in the lower elevations but coming on in the mid ranges. You'll have a great time. Just remember to bring your grad filters, polerizer and watch the weather. Dont stay in camp if it's ugly out, head for the forest and shoot wildlife, flowers, and waterfalls!
