Banding on b&w ink jet prints

Recommended Posts

I'm getting horizontal banding on my b&w prints - especially noticeable in the black areas. I have already done about 5 nozzel checks and cleaning and 1 deep clean. Also did a print head alignment. Also switched the black carts. Those actions improved it a little but still can see slight banding in the blacks. Any additional actions I have not thought of would be appreciated.

Using a PIXMA ip8720 with 3rd party inks (the PGI-250 XL is pigment) and CANON Premium Matte paper 13x19. Also using the 'plain paper'/GRAYSCALE setting to eliminate all traces of color tints. I know the PGI-250 XL/'plain paper setting is normally used to print text but this is the only setting I'm using that does not produce green/magenta/cyan color tints on b&w prints. The prints are high contrast and a tad harsh but I like that look for what I'm printing right now.

I suspect that it isn't possible to make all inkjets exactly alike. Close enough for most people and most images.

For a large uniform gray area, very small density changes might be visible.

And maybe more visible in black and white than color.

I recently had a similar problem with my Epson Photo Stylus 1400. I brought it to a Epson repair and he soaked the print head and it cleared up the problem. Otherwise I was looking at replacing the print head. It might be worth a try for you to have this done.

When I open the PrinterTestFileFlat.tif, the "print" option is grayed out.

I have Lightroom 6 as well as CS6.

Don't know what you're doing but all fine on this end. You unzipped it and opened it in Photoshop right?

I just profiled my 10 year old Dell 24" monitor with the Color Munki. The color patches are close but not perfect and the blue on my print is a little purple compared to the test file on the monitor.

I have the Epson Stylus Photo R3000 using Epson inks; Windows 7.

Thank you for your help.
