david_h._hartman

The question...

Ron Finger , Aug 04, 2004; 12:31 p.m.

The new Nikon Coolpix 8700 $200 rebate requires the camera to be purchased from an authorized dealer or reseller. No such list is available from Nikon (I called). Not one on-line dealer is willing to send any proof or even an email that they are authorized - and they will not stand behind the rebate if Nikon denies it. "We've never had a problem before with a Nikon rebate." I sure don't want to buy it at full price and there are good deals out there. Any suggestions?

By the way, since the rebate will arrive or be denied at least 60 days after it is sent in and the rebate is from a 3rd party, the credit card companies will not help if there is a problem.

The Answer...

WHERE TO BUY

Best,

Dave Hartman. john_carter_rhodes
Well, as always, that sucks, David. Does anyone really have any good feedback about Nikon USA on this site? As a user of Nikon UK, which, I believe, is a direct subsiduary of Nikon Inc., I have no such problems, but I can't understand why Nikon Inc. puts up with this. Does anyone know? John. Carl Stone
A simple Google search looking for "Authorized Nikon online resellers", produced 8400 responses. B&H has it listed with a Lexar 1GB 40X CF card as a kit, for an additional $10.00 above the regular price. Either way , as a B&H kit, or not, it has a $200.00 rebate. This is not rocket science, if it was me wanting an 8700, I'd buy the kit from B&H tomorrow morning. If you have any doubts contact Henry Posner <henryp@bhphotovideo.com>, and he will give it to you straight.
david_h._hartman
I as told by Willie, owner of Authorized Camera Service, some years back that Mel Pierce Camera lost and regained their authorized repair status with Nikon several times. I had problems with Mel Pierce Camera on two occasions regarding minor Nikon warranty repairs. The first problem I repaired myself. The second was a defective O/C Key for a Nikon F2. That part was replaced by ACS, Sherman Oaks, California.

When buying a Nikon F100, F5, DSLR(s), AF-S G VR and similar items I would never accept the word of a just any camera store that said it was an Authorized Nikon Dealer. Some will lie, especially those of the bait and switch variety that are likely to have the lowest prices.

A search of Google.com as suggested by Carl is a good idea but Id cross check this with Nikon USAs website. Actually Id buy at a local dealer Ive been doing business with since 1977 or from B&H Photo.

Regards,

Dave.
