James G. Dainis
Is there any place where I could find a listing of Canon F-1 serial numbers indicating the year that they were made? James G. Dainis
awahlster
NO Canon did do it that way. If you open the film compartment in the area the cassette fits you will see a black ink stamp of 4 or more numbers and letters. That is the date code. You can check it against this chart to find the age of your body. http://web.archive.org/web/20070413033755/www.canonfd.com/agedet.htm
ben_hutcherson
The date code is the most accurate and easiest way, however you can at least get an estimate of age by comparing the serial number to those with known date codes. This was made possible by a gentleman who spent years collecting thousands of serial numbers for F-1s, and very generously shared his data with me when I wanted to undertake a similar project of my own. For example, the date code is no longer present on my F-1N. The serial number, though, of 274746 places its production in or around 1988. James, if you will provide your serial number, I will see what I can find with regard to the date it was made. If you have the date code, though, as Mark mentions, it's far easier. James G. Dainis
Thank you. I did a search of photo.net and the web before posting my question here. A further exhaustive search got me this:
http://canon.cavey.org/html/canon_date_codes.php
According to that (and confirmed by me) our own beloved Bob Atkins has the date codes on his web site. Entering "date codes" in his search box brings it up. My problem in my searches was not using the term "date codes".
Ben, thank you but I have what I need now. James G. paul_beavin
Ben--we seem to have a slight date variation here. I have a "new" F-1 with an S/N of 298xxx and the date code in the camera is Z 1 31. According to the chart, that's a 1985 date. Surely we can;t be off three years...but then--who knows? Paul
howard_holzer
I just acquired an Old F1 with Date Code: M 217 (NO prefix or suffix letter) ... I assume it was made in February 1972 ? ... Can anyone confirm for me ? Thanks, Howard
gordon_yee
Sounds right to me. Your F1 should have a maximum ASA setting of 2000, an all-metal film wind lever (i.e., no plastic tip) and no film reminder holder on the back.
