jnanian
hi there i was wondering if anyone knows the dimensions of film? i am planning a project where i coat my own film ( 8x10 ) using bottled liquid emulsion, but unfortunately i don't know the dimensions ... i rather get my hands on some 8x10 plate holders but since i can't - i am kind of reverting to film and paper negatives ... thanks! -john
jason_fristensky
John - I just went and measured my 8X10 Tri-X film and from edge to edge it is 7 15/16 x 9 15/16. Guess it isnt exaclty 8x10 but who actaully measures. Hope that helps. Jason

stephen hazelton
John, I've read that when they first started making sheet film, they made it to fit into an adaptor that went into a plate glass holder- the glass was actually 8x10, so the film had to be slightly smaller. I know 4x5 film is slightly smaller than 4x5, I was thinking 1/8" smaller.
jnanian
hi thanks for the info on plate/ film adapters. i have a few of those sleeves, and did n't really put 2 + 2 together to realize that was the reason for the size differences :) as for the project i am thinking of doing ... i used to coat glass plates when i was at college, and i kind of wanted to get into it again. its been a long time ( 15-20 years) ... i just got a new 8x10 :) i thought i would make a big plate or 2 .... but then there was the problem of not having any glass holders :) i remembered it wasn't too hard to coat mylar / acetate / paper with liquid light, so i thought i would see how it went. i'll probably take architectural/streetscape sort of views first, and later on try to take some long exposure portraits. ... asa 1 or 5 is pretty darn slow though. maybe i'll have to find a "head clamp" on ebay or something :) -john
jay_de_fehr
Hi John. Have you considered making your own emulsion? I think you could reasonably expect better than ei 6.
jnanian
hi jay: i have considered making my own emulsion. i have some experience using liquid light, and thought i would experiment a little with that before i "made the leap" to making my own. i wanted to make paper negatives / paper emulsion, but my main stumbling block is waxing the paper to make it translucent. i have a photo-annual from 1906 which recommends a few things, but i have also read here and there about a waxing process that takes place BEFORE you make the exposure - which is what i want to do. any suggestions about making translucent paper negatives? THANKS! -john
k._milller
Hi! ....and I am trying to get MY hands on some Agfa 8x10 film. Any suggestions on where to get some? How many plate holders would you want? I MAY be able to get some. I am travelling at the moment,so don't be surprized if I am slow in responding. gauthier
Agfa has discontinued it's LF film production. Time to switch to Ilford, which has laways been very supportive of the LF community.
