Accidentally Ferrotyped my BW negs. Anything I can do?

Recommended Posts

At first, your problem seemed much worse. If you have actually ferrotyped your negatives it would mean that you had put them on a hot, smooth metal surface to dry them, in which case you would be up the creek so to speak.

First, remove any negatives that you can without harming the emulsion, which may try to stick to the sleeve. When you are left with only those that cannot be removed without emulsion damage, soak the sleeve in water with some wetting agent added. Then VERY GENTLY spread the sleeve to allow water to flow onto the negative. This should release the emulsion and allow you to carefully remove the negative from the sheet. The wetting agent may help the removal process and help prevent scratches. Once you have them out, soak them in water + wetting agent and dry as normal. It's hard to say what you'll end up with, but if you are patient and work carefully, you should be able to at least extricate the negatives.
