jane_dawson
I am a new 10D user and am happy with the camera. Most of the time I use it on automatic settings, however, I am interested in getting a book that explains the advantages of the advanced manual override features and how to best make use of them. The only book that I have found so far that deals specifically with the 10D's capabilities is "A Short Course in EOS 10D Photography" http://www.digitalreview.ca/cams/10Dbook.shtml Do any of you recommend this book for someone that is looking to learn how to use the 10D's advanced options? Thank you, J.Dawson
anne_f._bellenger1
Jane, the Short Courses book is probably the only one you will find specifically for the 10D. I ordered it myself. I also used the Short Courses D30 book which gives info not in the owner's manual. As for the creative advanced options, some of that can be learned by trial and error. If you know about DOF and shutter speed/aperture settings, you are ahead. Settings also depend on your subject. If I am shooting landscapes or macro, I use aperture priority. If I'm shooting birds, I'll use shutter speed. You just have to take lots of pics, try different settings, and you can always trash what didn't turn out. melissa_eiselein
Anne: Obviously, you liked the one you bought for your D30 or you wouldn't have ordered another for your 10D. But I'm curious...what exactly does the book tell you that the manual doesn't? When I skimmed the online index, it seemed to cover the same things I'm reading in the manual. PuppyDigs
Although only 124 pages, it appears more wordy. Interestingly, the Canon manual is longer, 184 pages, but is concise and relies heavily on diagrams and icons in its explanations. I think the 10D manual is fairly well written, better than the average EOS manual. Canon manuals have improved in the last few years. For example, the Rebel Ti manual is better than the Rebel manuals of yesteryear (e.g., actually explains technical terms and why you may want to use Av mode over P). Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
