colleendonovan
I got a strange phone call this morning that I thought was a scam, but now I'm not sure!!
The caller ID said Hawaii. I answered the phone and the guy is speaking to me in Spanish and so I said 'I can't understand you' and he started talking in English (kind of). He says he's getting married and wants to know how much I charge. So I ask him what kind of coverage he's looking for and he tells me he's not sure, they just want formals, etc. (I think that's what he said, I could hardly understand half the conversation) he kept asking how much I charge so I asked him what day he was getting married on and I pretended I was checking and then told him I was booked.
So now I think I jumped the gun! Oh well. He said he was getting married in Moses Lake and then he asked where I was located (which is in Moses Lake) It just seemed strange and he was asking weird questions. Maybe I should call back and get more info. But how would I do that without looking like a weirdo myself if it is a legitimate customer?
wedding-photography-denver
I think there are some genuine people who just act stragely and then there are the scammers, but they rearely call on the phone. If you get asked to do anything other than show up and shoot (i.e. send the balance or similar to some one) I would think it a scam. Best, D. david_schilling___chicago_
Could have been a scam but maybe not....You can always call back and say that you misunderstood and that as of now the date is open. Then refer him to your website and suggest that you communicate via emails. Afterwards, look for the other signs of a scam that typically originate with an email. With cell phones the caller ID could say Texas but the'ye actually living in California or somewhere else...especially with people using a company phone. emwalker
My take- He took his girlfriend (now fiance) to Hawaii, popped the question, and now he's busy trying to make some crash wedding plans because they're in love and don't want to wait.... or, something like that. Don't let the accent fool you- just because he doesn't speak great English doesn't mean he's not going to need a wedding photographer soon! colleendonovan
Yeah, I feel like a big ding dong! I called him back and talked to him a little, found out some details, etc. Then I asked how he had heard about me and his fiance had gone to some party here and someone had given her my name. Go figure. That's what I get for being paranoid! I sent him my info so maybe he'll still book me. :)
farmer on the hill
Call him back! don't loos the business, tell him you got a cancilation and the date is open. Ask for a credit card no. to confirm and tell him if he no shows there is a 40% cancilation fee; this will give you an idea if it's a scam or not
laurenm
Funny story Colleen. I'm always thinking I'm getting scammed in some way. Good to be on your toes anyway. Hope he books you and we get to see the pictures. Maybe the bride's family is from nearby where you are? Lauren georgetown, MA
